The Athletic’s Rangers correspondent Jordan Campbell has identified a big task manager Steven Gerrard has on his hands following the debut of January addition Ianis Hagi at the weekend in his latest article.
What did he say?
Well, the Romania international came on to make his bow for the final 13 minutes of the goalless draw against Aberdeen on Sunday, and while he didn’t have a great deal of time to make a big impact, he showed glimpses of what he is about.
The Athletic article says that the 21-year-old, who scored three goals and provided a further four assists in 19 appearances in all competitions for Genk this term prior to his loan move to Ibrox, likes to play in a free attacking midfield role – one where he can come short and drift out wide, too.

Campbell writes that the reason Hagi – son of Romanian legend Gheorghe – has so far failed to make it on the biggest stage is that “he can seem to do a lot without actually affecting the game”.
The article went on to say: “Gerrard’s task is to figure out how to take his undoubted talent and convert it into an efficient midfielder who contributes goals and assists.”
Working under the right manager
If Hagi needs to improve his numbers in terms of goals and assists, then you’d have to think that he is now playing under a coach who can help him in that respect.
Gerrard was a midfielder who loved to get forward and score and assist when possible during his playing career with Liverpool, as shown by the fact he scored 120 goals and assisted a further 92 in 504 Premier League appearances.

Only 36 of those goals were penalties or free-kicks too, which shows he was also hugely useful away from set-pieces.
Hagi may be an impressive young talent, but he now needs to show more if he wants to take the next step.
Gerrard could be just the manager to help him do that, all while helping Rangers pose more of a threat in the final third than they do right now.
