Football London’s Tottenham Hotspur correspondent Alasdair Gold has issued an interesting update on the club’s reported pursuit of FC Porto striker Ze Luis this month.
What’s he said?
Well, Portuguese TV Station SIC Noticias, via Correio da Manha, reported on Tuesday that the 28-year-old is close to a loan move to Spurs, in a deal set up by super-agent Jorge Mendes.
Another Mendes client in Gedson Fernandes completed his link-up with compatriot Jose Mourinho in north London on Wednesday morning, and now a second one could be on the cards to cover for Harry Kane’s hamstring injury – the England international has been ruled out until April.
However, Gold has poured some cold water on the link via Football London, suggesting he isn’t the near the top of their wish-list.
He wrote: ‘Jorges Mendes client, Ze Luis at Porto, has been linked in the Portuguese press.
‘A loan move for the forward, who turns 29 before the January transfer window closes, is understood to be unlikely unless Tottenham exhaust all other options.’
Rightly a last resort
Tottenham clearly need a player guaranteed to get them goals in the next few month if they are to bring in a new centre-forward this month, and Ze Luis’ record suggests he isn’t the man for the job.
The Cape Verde international has eight goals in 20 appearances for Porto this term following his summer move from Spartak Moscow, where he netted 35 times in 109 outings.
The big fat Tottenham quiz of 2019 – how much do you remember about the last year at Spurs?
Given these leagues are both weaker than the Premier League, his record would have to be a concern.
In addition, as Gold points out, this is a player who turns 29 later this month and therefore may be past the point of improvement as a result.
Yes, he culd be a short-term solution for Spurs if they can’t find anyone else, but Mourinho would be much better off finding a serious option who can really compete and push Kane for his starting spot at the end of this season and beyond.
In other Tottenham news, Spurs new-boy Gedson Fernandes has already labelled one thing at his loan club as “unbelievable” after completing his loan move…
